East Coast Waterfront Living
There’s something about living on the East Coast that really settles you in the soul. I think it contributes with your sense of wanting to be close to nature and there is certainly an abundance of it on the east side of our country. From sprawling mountains, kms of trails, nature parks and acres of lush forest, but what really speaks to me is the water. We are extremely fortunate to live alongside so many bodies of water. Whether it is the bay of Fundy, our winding river systems or our large lakes, when it comes to water we’ve got options.
Have you ever considered some of the benefits of living on the water as opposed to packing up the van and driving to it with every spare weekend? Not that that isn’t a blast because I for one love a good road trip, even a short one. There are just some benefits to taking up residency on the shoreline that maybe get overlooked.
Let’s start with the morning when the sun decides it’s time to start the day. This has to be one of my personal favourites. It would be no surprise to see me with my camera outside trying to capture the mist whisking across the top of the water lifting up along with the sun. This is the quiet time in the morning that when the temperature allows is ideal for a coffee outside. It is hard not to be grateful and start the day in a positive light when these are your surroundings.
Not a morning person, no problem. Let’s fast forward to mid-day.
In the summer months you can take up some pretty fun activities living on the water. Whether you love to swim like myself, love to float like my wife or prefer to put the boat in the water and go for a cruise there is something a little special about being able to do so from your own dock. Having such easy access allows for a lot of flexibility in your schedule and provides a great setting to entertain friends and family.
The evening hours have their own magical splendour when the moonlight starts glistening on the waves and the frog/crickets start singing, sitting and taking it all in is a whole other feeling of relaxation. We tend to enjoy the outside along with a fire crackling and a glass of wine to finish out the day.
Sliding into winter and there is still a long cold list of ways to appreciate your surroundings, they just require some additional clothing. Every year we dig out our shovels, run the string lights and create a skating rink that gets lots of action day and night. The lakes and the rivers are filled with people snowshoeing, skiing and pulling sleds behind their atv’s. Living on the water isn’t just a benefit in the warmer months, we fill days with family activities in the winter as well.
If you are like me and you are naturally drawn to a body of water and are inclined to want to explore and enjoy it as much as possible, finding your home on your very own slice of paradise should move up on your 2022 goals list.
