Got the urge? Let’s purge!
Whether you are moving or just doing a seasonal clean sweep of your space, you are going to probably have a lot of items to get rid of. Let’s talk about how to turn your stash into cash or feel great about giving it away!
First of all start your journey by creating piles or boxes labeled:
- Keep
- Trash
- Sell
- Donate/Give away
KEEP – Your keep items will be things that you love and cannot dream of parting with that have simply gotten misplaced in what I call my “squirrel piles”. These are piles of random things that accumulate on your dressers, side tables, kitchen counters, desks and common spaces. Look through these piles and sort out what you want to keep and the rest will go in categories 2-4. Put these items back where they belong with like items in drawers, cupboards, dressers & closets.
TRASH- Don't tell me you're the type to leave trash laying around! Maybe you just haven’t put that junk mail in the recycle bin yet? Well, now is the time! What is trash? What can be recycled? Or… what can you turn into cash? Get out the big black plastic bags or the blue bins and give the ol’ heave ho to the garbage and recyclable pieces cluttering up your home.
SELL – Now, you should be left with two piles Sell or donate/giveaway.
So, here comes the super-fun part!
You get to decide if you are selling your goodies that are left or donating them?
I first think of the locate marketplace and buy & sell groups on facebook. I'm old, so years ago there used to actually be a printed paper where I lived called The Moneysaver that people would advertise their gently used items for sale. Well, gone are those days but it is soooooo easy now to post your items online….Kijiji, ebay or right on facebook. People can porch pick up at your home or you can choose to meet them at a local Tim Hortons or something if you are not comfortable giving out your address deets. Cash or E-transfer for payment. You choose!
I do recommend putting stickers on your items that you have for sale so you remember how much you posted each item for. This comes in handy if you have a lot to sell. A list could work too. As you take photos to post, write down the item, size if needed, and the asking price.
You can always throw up the garage door too and have a good ol’ fashioned Garage sale on some random Saturday too. I mean you're already prepared so why not! (Don’t forget to advertise leading up to the event & the day of) Don’t forget if you have some things that are antiques or great value there are some second hand shops that will buy your stash for cash on the spot. Scope out the ones in your local area and see what they can offer you for those coins, vintage items or large furniture items.
DONATE/GIVEAWAY – So, last but not least we are going to giveaway or donate things or what is left after we tried to sell our wares. So, do you have someone that you know first of all that could benefit from your generosity? A single mom that has kids that wear a size smaller than your kiddos? Maybe you have some craft items that you could donate to a local daycare? Or toys that they might want ? Secondly, can we donate the items to a local charity like a vocational center, hospice shop, or womans/mens shelter that will provide you with a tax receipt? Or can you donate to a local second hand shop? Sometimes I break my donate items into smaller boxes / piles and donate a bit everywhere to help out numerous local groups.
